While teachers are working with small groups of students in guided reading, other students will be participating in Daily 5 activities. These include:
*Each student will have their own book box in the classroom. This is where they keep 5-6 books, some that interest them but may be too difficult to read on their own, and some simpler books that they may be able to read more independently.
Read to Self - Students will choose a comfortable spot in the classroom and read books from their book box independently. 3 ways to read these books are reading the pictures, retelling a familiar story, or reading the words.
Work on Writing - Students will use their journals to respond to a writing prompt using pictures and/or words. We encourage inventive spelling and using the word wall to spell known sight words.
Word Work - Students will have a choice of games and activities to practice letters, names, and sight words. These may include magnetic letters, Play-Doh, and wiki sticks.
Listen to Reading - Students will use computers and iPads to listen to stories being read to them through headphones.
Read to Someone - Students will sit with a partner and take turns sharing books from their book boxes and reading together.
